John Lever rose to prominence as a Percussionist and Songwriter beginning in the late 70's, notably for the post punk/indie/goth/new wave bands, The Politicians, 13 Across, The Chameleons, The Sun and The Moon and later The Red Sided Garter Snakes. The music consisted of dubbed out bass lines, gothic vocals, melodic synth lines and meticulous drum programming with a signature heavy gated snare drum and peculiar left handed drum setup.

With The Chameleons John recorded several seminal albums in the early 80's peaking the interest of CBS, Virgin and Geffen records. Bands such as New Order, U2 and legendary radio DJ John Peel where also big fans. The Chameleons are considered a major influence on modern Indie rock and shoe-gaze, with the likes of Oasis, Slowdive and Interpol citing them as a massive influence.

John toured the world heavily throughout the 80's and early 90's before The Chameleons split up and formed The Sun and The Moon and Music for Aborigines. In the late 90's he continued to record music under his own name and as Beefpig, self releasing unheard electronic music incorporating samplers and synthesisers along with live drums and guitars to mesmerising effect. The Chameleons reformed again in the late 2000's for several dates and reissued their debut album Script of the Bridge remastered at Abby Road.

1979-1999 is a mixtape compiling choice picks from John and his fellow bandmates working life, lovingly restored from dusty cassette demos of lesser know material alongside Chameleons classics.
